I’ve never been to the races before. Never watched the Melbourne Cup on Tv. I cannot tell you the name of any famous horses (except Pharlap.) I have never worn a fascinator, never placed a bet on a horse, and never eaten fancy finger food whilst sipping champagne and pretending to know which odds are good and which are bad.
So when I was asked to fill in for a fellow photographer at Stakes Day, I was a little apprehensive.
I was to photograph in the CGU Marquee, which was elaborately decorated. I just treated it as I would any social/event photography job, and captured lots of candid shots as well as posed group photos. There were only ladies in the marquee, so naturally they didn’t mind having their photo taken. It was also over 30 degrees on the day, so being inside was much appreciated! (I was wearing a buttoned up collared shirt and long pants.)
It was a great day, and the ladies enjoyed lots of delicious looking finger food and free-flowing drinks. There were some fabulous outfits and fascinators too. And a few big wins, which led to a lot of cheering and celebrating.
Here are a few shots from the day…
